What is a fill? Why do I need them?

Having a set of eyelash extensions is in theory, no different to having a set of nail enhancements. Once the set is completed they look amazing!  However after two weeks pass,  natural growth starts to take place and gaps start to appear.  Just like with our nails having lashes is a commitment, we need to have regular maintenance or infills to keep them looking pristine, fresh and full.

Lash refills every 3-4 weeks (3ish for Classic, 3-4 for Hybrid/Volume/Mega) are essential to keeping your lashes looking their best. Refills maintain the dense look of your lash set and to prevent damage to your lashes from heavy and droopy outgrown lashes.

Like the hair on your head, your lashes shed daily, many people don't realize this! You lose about 2-5 lashes a day, which you rarely notice as they are so fine and thin. Once you lose a natural lash (that has an extension on it) a new one grows in its place.

At your refill appointment we remove any outgrown lash extensions that have moved halfway up your natural lash as its grown. Then we place a new extension/fan on any of the lashes currently without an extension.

The extensions on your natural lashes will shed after or around 4 weeks when properly cared for. It is recommended to get a Lash Fill every 3-4 weeks to maintain fullness. Keep in mind your natural lashes do normally shed 2-5 per day – per eye, being why refills are so important, this also depends on your natural hair growth cycle & client aftercare.  BUT, the frequency is largely determined by various factors.

If you are leaving your refill longer than 4 weeks you are going to be leaving your refill appointment with a lot of natural lashes without an extension, as there is only so much we can do in the time allotted for a fill appointment. This means your lashes are not at their fullest potential. They may look fine leaving, but don’t forget a lot of those lashes are going to shed, which could happen in the next week (due to your growth cycle).

As you won’t have as many lash extensions on, it will be more noticeable when a few shed. If you continue to leave it longer than 3 weeks between fills your lashes will begin to become less and less full as time goes on. The only option at that point is to have a full set so we can lash every single natural lash again. So make sure to keep on top of your lash refills!

We as technicians can only do our part during an infill appointment while our guests lay on our table.  The rest of time it is up to the guest to take care of the lashes.  This is why we go over proper lash aftercare so you can take care of your investment.  The daily well being of those beauties will determine how many extensions are remaining by the next appointment.

There are several factors that can cause those extensions to shed before their time.

  • Daily maintenance.  What is the makeup routine, use of skincare products, sunscreens?  How about swimming in the ocean, doing hot yoga?  Jogging?  Diligent daily cleansing?  Lifestyle plays the biggest role in the way those lashes are lasting.

  • Hormones.  Ok now, we are each unique with different body chemistry.   Hormones go up and down fluctuating constantly.   Changes to diet, exercise, stress, new or adjusted medications, supplements, illness, pregnancy and menopause, all play a role.   To begin with we all have slightly varied hair growth cycles and our hormone levels affect growth and loss cycles.  It is super-duper important to keep updated on any pertinent changes so lash adjustments can be made.

  •  Growth Serums.  Lashes grow out faster.  As they do, more frequent lash fills can be made to remove the out grown extensions and fresh ones applied closer to the lash line.  This is the first part of cleanup during every lash fill.  When using growth serums more of this type of maintenance will probably be necessary during the appointment.  Go ahead and book more regularly or book some extra time with your fills.
